We are starting a new series blog called a Tiny Desk Spotlight where we spotlight Garden members' desks! I am excited to start off this blog by interviewing Imani and asking her about the inspiration behind her desk area.

Brown skinned avatar,
Imani (24) / She & Her Pronouns / South East LA

Imani joined Garden about two months ago after attending the Pandemic Solidarity for the Long Future convening and has been an active member in Garden ever since. Imani says she loves to watch movies with others at Name that Movie (Night) on Wednesdays and co work in Garden, "it's nice to chat with people who are hanging out here and co working. I like that this is a drop in space, you can show up any time and people might be here."

Imani's desk

To find Imani's desk, go to the office space downstairs. Shortly after entering the Farm Office area, you will see her desk and trailer. Imani said she was striving for a 70's cozy vibe in her desk area, which you can tell by the old school style beige chair and computer monitor. She also mentioned using seasonal themes to inspire her decorations. Since it's still spring, she used birds and and lavender bushes as decorations outside her tailer door.

Right before you enter her trailer is a note 🗒️ on a sign. If you press "x" you will see a quote from Sandra Cisneros, "House of my own" from her book "The House on Mango Street".

Notepad says, "“Not a flat. Not an apartment in back. Not a man's house. Not a daddy's. A house all my own. With my porch and my pillow, my pretty purple petunias. My books and my stories. My two shoes waiting beside the bed. Nobody to shake a stick at. Nobody's garbage to pick up after. Only a house quiet as snow, a space for myself to go, clean as paper before the poem.” — Sandra Cisneros, House of My Own, from The House on Mango Street"

When you enter her trailer, you can clearly see the 70's cottage core vibes inspiration in the space. Imani shared there was a bit of learning curve with the customization tool, but once she got it down she got very creative with the layering and intentional about the vibe she wanted to set in her space.

As Imani sips her wine on her green couch, the vitrola behind her is playing music. "I used to have "Fast car by Tracy Chapman playing, but then I changed it to Systemic Pandemic by L.A Salami", Imani said.

On the coffee table is a chess board, a decorative plant, and a candle. Not too far is an easel with a blank canvas. "I grew up playing chess, and liked playing it when I was a kid." She doesn't really paint but she loves to create, scrapbook, add notes, drawings and collages in her art journal and wanted the easel to represent that.

Imani is open to meeting new folks in Garden, stop by to check out her space and say hi!

That's all for now, until next our avatars meet!
